10 Best Killer Doll Movies

3) Dolls (1987)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7oKDtytJnE Dolls is scary. My sister worked for years in a video rental shop and Dolls was in the horror section. I would have been about 11 or 12 and my sis very naughtily used to lend me 18 certificate movies. But I never rented Dolls. Oh no. Even the cover gave me nightmares. Flash forward 20 years. Doll phobia waned. Criminally denied a DVD release, I purchased a VHS copy of Dolls from ebay. Place in video recorder, press play, sit back and watch the action roll... There's a thunderstorm and 6 people end up stranded in a mansion. Milquetoast business man Ralph who has picked up 2 British punk girls. Judy and her father and cold b**ch stepmother. The place is covered in dolls because they have wound up in the home of two elderly doll-makers - Gabriel and Hillary. Turns out Gabe and Hil are witches and use their dolls to do their demonic bidding. Judy's father and stepmother are killed by the dolls for not paying adequate attention or love to her. The two female punks cop it at the hands of the dollies for trying to steal. Ralph and Judy escape because Judy is pure of heart and Ralph is young at heart - qualities the dolls respect. They are bade farewell by Gabe and Hill in the morning and an open invitation to visit is extended. As they drive off, the car gets stuck in the mud... In this scary doll movie there is plenty of gore and imaginative, well paced and well filmed kill scenes. The director - Stuart Gordon of Reanimator fame - sustains a highly creepy atmosphere. The dolls are very very scary - they are well crafted and the special effects are decent (stop-motion animation for the most part). I am at a loss as to why Dolls never got the sequel or franchise treatment. There are a zillion Puppetmasters and they are not a patch on Dolls - Dolls was the pioneer scary doll movie. My only grouse - too short at 75 minutes.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
