10 Best Legacy Movie Sequels Ever

3. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Top Gun Maverick
Warner Bros.

Blade Runner is such a rich sci-fi film - so full of potential, brilliant worldbuilding, and wonder - that it's actually quite surprising it took nearly forty years to receive a sequel. Thanks to visionary director Denis Villeneuve, it proved to be worth the wait.

Starring Ryan Gosling as a replicant cop thrust into a potentially world-ending conspiracy, Blade Runner 2049 builds on the lore created by the original film, whilst exploring what became of Rick Deckard, played once more by a weathered but still indomitable Harrison Ford.

With Roger Deakins' stunning, career-best cinematography and a script that builds on the mythology of its predecessor, 2049 is a slow-burn masterpiece that acts as a perfect return - and send-off - to the world Ridley Scott made so memorable decades earlier.

No, it doesn't reach the highs of the original, but it comes close enough, and on its own merits is a sci-fi masterclass worthy of its place alongside it.
