10 Best Leonardo DiCaprio Movies Of All Time

6. Shutter Island

Shutter Island Leonardo DiCaprio
Paramount Pictures

DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have worked together several times, each time producing a solid outing for both. While The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street may be two of the more decorated films they've released together, Shutter Island is one of their darkest and most disturbing.

The film follows the search for a missing prisoner, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. It stars DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, along with the always excellent Ben Kingsley and Michelle Williams.

It is a minefield of plot twists, guiding the viewer along while never giving them a chance to come up for air. The hunt for the prisoner is harrowing and frightening, doing everything in its power to make the viewer uneasy. The reveal, when it comes, it both shocking and upsetting, though handled in such a way that it is absolutely believable.

It is the closest that DiCaprio has come so far to acting in a horror film (Critters 3 notwithstanding) and if this is anything to go by, he would make a more than excellent horror movie hero. He is both calm and unsettling. He is powerful and breaks down. He shows his range here, delving into the madness of the situation.

Shutter Island is not an easy watch. However, when you invest the time and put all distractions away, it is one of the best thrillers of the last twenty years.
