5. Django Unchained

It can sometimes take quite a lot of time to truly hate someone. The film has to build the story to such a point that hating them feels natural. It has to be handled with grace and care. In Django Unchained, that process takes roughly the amount of time it takes for DiCaprio to turn and smile at the camera.

Calvin Candie is one of the most loathsome characters in cinematic history. He takes such joy in the cruelty his visits on the slaves under his keep, played to eerie perfection by DiCaprio. This is the same man that was a young leading man for so long, one who took pride in the pretty boy aesthetic that was heaped on him.

Here, that is all but banished by the bile that spills from him. While his death is a foregone conclusion, the fact that the audience all but whoops for joy when it happens is a testament to the utter evil that DiCaprio inhabits in the part.

There is also the now famous behind the scenes moment where, in a fit of acting pique, DiCaprio brought his hand down hard on the table, shattering a glass and embedding that glass into his palm. Bleeding for real, he then proceeds to wipe this blood over the horrified Kerry Washington's face. Arguably, he was immersed in the moment. Arguably, too much so.

Either way, his performance raises the film to something of another level. Django may not be for the faint-hearted but is undeniably worth the effort.
