10 Best Leonardo DiCaprio Movies Of All Time

4. The Departed

Leonardo DiCaprio The Beach
Warner Bros.

In a film such as this one, boasting an incredible ensemble cast, the fact that any of them manage to stand out over the rest is a feat unto itself. DiCaprio manages to break away from his prettier mould here, becoming Billy Costigan in one of the more intense portrayals of his career.

This is undoubtedly one of the best films that DiCaprio has appeared in, not least due to his performance. As the mole buried deep in the mafia, he has to balance both the pressures of constantly lying with trying to have a semblance of a life. The film is one big cat and mouse hunt, twisting and turning throughout.

While to reveal any major plot points here would spoil rather a lot for those who haven't seen the film, suffice to say that DiCaprio manages to shine as the seemingly unhinged Costigan, battling his way through the mob to get where he needs to be. He takes manys a brutal beating along the way.

This is one of Scorsese's later films, the first for which he received an Oscar, which many thought was a commiseration for earlier losses. Be that as it may, with DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Mark Whalberg all delivering powerhouse performances, it is hard to argue that it is anything less than a terrific story from start to finish.
