7. Blade Of The Immortal
This emotional and action-packed flick is brought to life by the legendary Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, who's best known for his terrifying horror movies like Audition, Ichi the Killer, Imprint and more. Part of what makes him such a great director is his flair for lavish visuals, and that is seen tenfold in this beautifully crafted, cinematic experience.
Blade of the Immortal follows a samurai named Manji, who has the gift/curse of immortality. He is approached by a young girl named Rin, who seeks his help on her journey of revenge against a group of samurai who took the life of her family. It's a very simple narrative that lends a great eye to the themes of revenge and morality.
There are two points to this movie that make it incredible, with the first being the stunning fight scenes. As expected from a project with such a well-known visual director, the film is gorgeous, and whenever a fight takes place, it is filled with character. The choreography is well handled, and the cinematography makes them a real treat.
However, the biggest highlight is the charming dynamic between Manji and Rin. Seeing the leading figure go from a reluctant participant to a thoughtful and caring guardian is compelling and emotional, and captures the heartfelt crux of the story perfectly.
