10 Best Live-Action Anime Movies
6. Speed Racer
It's safe to say that Speed Racer isn't a technically sound film at all. The ridiculous movie created by the Wachowskis is a goofy and over-the-top thrill ride that's full of weird moments and a focus on style over substance. But, when the style looks as good as this, what more can you ask for? It's hardly like the original anime was a sublime piece of Shakespearian storytelling.
The plot follows the young titular racer, who has a drive to become the racing world's champion and follow in his deceased brothers footsteps. He does so by remaining loyal to his family, which causes him some concern as he becomes the target of Royalton Industries after refusing a contract from them.
People criticised this film for being too over-the-top and weird, but as an adaptation of an anime, that's precisely what it needed to be. The incredibly strong visuals make the film look like the original series come to life, and the use of visual storytelling is masterful. Plenty of storyline beats and context was given through action and imagery as opposed to dialogue, which made the film engaging and easy to sit through.
Plus, as can be expected from a racing movie, there's a profound sense of adrenaline and speed which makes the ride thrilling.
