Swords are awesome, and seeing masters wield them in anime is stunning. There's nothing better than sitting down and watching two masters of their craft battling each other to the bitter end.

Rurouni Kenshin, however, approaches this in such a unique direction, as aside from showing off some blistering fights, it's also a thought-provoking, poignant and romantic anime. Somehow, the live-action adaptation continues this, as it captures many of the best elements of the series.

Ruroni Kenshin follows the exploits of Himura Kenshin, a former assassin who attempts to atone for his past sins by taking a vow never to kill again and wandering the Japanese countryside offering help to those who need it. However, his vow becomes repeatedly tested as he's put through harsh scenarios and moral choices.

The movie was successful enough to gain a sequel, which was also spectacular, and is set to conclude with a two-part 2021 movie release. Part of the series' appeal comes from the breath-taking fight choreography, which hits you with an intense amount of speed and precision, yet feels emotional and raw thanks to the protagonist's conflict with taking life.

This inherent conflict, and the emotional dynamic between him and those he helps, makes the movie constantly engaging and complex.
