3. Ace Attorney

Alita Battle Angel
Toho

Another movie directed by the legendary Takashi Miike now, and this one is a real treat. Ace Attorney is based on the popular Capcom video game series Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and while this adaptation precedes the anime by four years, it still captures the sublime sense of what anime on the big screen should look like.

The movie follows Phoenix Wright, a novice defence attorney, as he works through court hearings and works hard to defend his clients. This becomes a battle of attrition as he steps off against tougher and tougher foes, proving himself to be the true ace of the courtroom.

If this sounds ridiculous, it's because it is, and that's why it's such an incredible movie. Like the Capcom series itself, Ace Attorney is full of over-the-top visuals (as expected with Miike) and wonderfully camp acting, presenting everything in an overly serious yet ridiculous tone.

Part of what makes anime and this gaming franchise unique is its ability to convert typically mundane things into a life or death situation. This film captures that sense of ridiculous everyday life perfectly. Despite how dull and tedious court proceedings are, this film would have you believe they are at the same level as a Dragon Ball Z fight.
