10 Best Live-Action Batman Characters (Who Aren't The Dark Knight)

6. Alfred Pennyworth - Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever & Batman & Robin (1989-1997)

With the passage of time and the existence of Michael Caine€™s affable portrayal of Alfred in Nolan€™s trilogy, it€™s easy to forget Michael Gough€™s portrayal of Bruce Wayne€™s dearest ally across the first four films between 1989 and 1997. With the first series of Bat-flicks ranging in quality and three different actors playing the titular character, Gough€™s Alfred was the one true constant across them all. Whereas Caine was saddled with understandably constant worry and doubt about his young Master Wayne's nocturnal activities, Gough brought a genuine warmth to the character that Caine didn€™t always have. Whether he€™s regaling Vicki Vale in the kitchen with stories of a young Bruce or manning his position in the Batcave while Batman is out fighting crime, Gough€™s Alfred was a far more understanding and active Alfred than Caine€™s, always there when Bruce needed him (and never abandoning him simply due to a heat of the moment fight). Even though Alfred is often made to act oddly for narrative convenience, such as letting Vale into the Batcave or assisting his niece in becoming Batgirl, Gough at least remains consistent in his portrayal of Alfred as the man who would stay by Bruce€™s side through thick and thin.
