If Captain America's shield is the de facto symbol of the MCU, then Thor's mighty hammer is the MCU's OG weapon. It's an MCU stalwart. It's part of the old guard of MCU iconography, along with Tony's circular arc reactor.

Mjolnir was Thor's original weapon (though it was wielded by Hela long before), a tool capable of channeling lightning, changing the weather, granting its user the power of flight, and smashing through just about anything that isn't magic or extraterrestrial. If you threw it, it'd always come back to you after wrecking a bunch of fools. To paraphrase the indomitable Korg, if you wielded Mjolnir long enough, you'd inevitably develop a "special and intimate relationship with this hammer." Mjolnir was the best boy.

It could only be lifted by those who were worthy; this enchantment was presumably placed upon it by Odin because of his history with Hela and Mjolnir. Not just anyone can pick it up and go to town. Fans can count on one hand the number of individuals who've wielded in the MCU: Thor, Odin, Hela, Vision, and Captain America. It's selective, and it's special.

Also of note: when Thor summons it, it encapsulates him in his armor. Mjolnir can summon clothes! I repeat: Mjolnir can summon clothes!
