10 Best Medieval War Movies
1. Outlaw King (2018)
William Wallace may have been executed in 1305, but the war for Scottish Independence was far from over. Enter Robert the Bruce, soon to be Scotland’s next king. And you can see this part of Scotland’s history play out in David Mckenzie’s Outlaw King.
Starring Chris Pine as the titular nobleman, the film takes place during the three year period between 1304 to 1307 as we see Bruce take up the crown and reignite support for the fight against the English. All of which culminates in the climactic Battle of Loudoun Hill, Bruce’s fist major military victory.
In keeping with the other entries in this list, Outlaw King is presented in stunning cinematography that shows off the impressive landscapes of Scotland and England alike with action scenes just as impressive. Likewise, the film shows Pine in his full glory (in more than one sense) in this role, with Florence Pugh and James Cosmo also being notable standouts.
More impressively, though, Outlaw King is incredibly historically accurate in both its depiction of medieval Scotland and Bruce’s story. Of course, some liberties were taken to simplify years of conflict into a feature film, but even these don’t compare to Braveheart’s comedy of errors.
