10 Best Michael Keaton Performances
4. Walter 'Robby' Robinson
Though Keaton had on many occasions proven that he was capable of more than comedy, Spotlight is one of the finest of examples of perfect casting. Here, he plays Robby, the head of the Spotlight team that investigates the Church child abuse scandals in Massachusetts.
Spotlight is a grim film, while at the same it is exciting. The team rushes to uncover the truth while they can, fighting not only their competitors but the Church itself. The closing scene of the film, listing the locations where there has been scandals uncovered through the years. There are few countries spared from that list. Sobering does not do it justice.
Keaton is both a fiery presence as the head of the team, while also keeping a secret covered, something that burns under his attempts to push the story through. He finally breaks, confessing that he was sent a list of names almost ten years earlier, something he feels that if acted on could have advanced the investigation much sooner.
Spotlight is a film that very deservedly won Best Picture in its year of release, not just because of its subject matter but also thanks to the fantastic ensemble that was put together for the piece. Keaton delivers another gritty performance, understated but powerful at the same time.
