10 Best Moments From The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Extended Edition

10. Bilbo Vouches For Thorin

When In The Film Is It: During the night-time showdown between Bard, the Dwarves and the Mayor of Laketown. What Happens: Instead of being welcomed immediately by the rulers of Laketown, Thorin finds his authority questioned, at which point Bilbo steps up to vouch for his character with a nice little speech; "if Thorin Oakenshield gives his word, then he will keep it." The film then continues as it does in the theatrical version, with Bard stepping in to challenge the dwarves. Why It's Great: After being the crux of the character development in An Unexpected Journey, the relationship between Thorin and Bilbo took a backseat in The Desolation Of Smaug, with narratively superfluous action pushed to the fore. This is only a small moment, but it serves of a reminder of the pair's previous conflict and the respect Thorin commands.
