10 Best Movie Fan Edits Of All Time
8. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit - The Maple Edit
There's surely no adaptation of a classic novel in recent times that blew its potential more aggressively than The Hobbit, as was needlessly milked into three tentpole movies with a combined runtime of 532-minutes (that's 8 hours, 52 minutes).
It didn't take too long for Dustin Lee from Maple Films to come to the rescue, shrewdly trimming the three films down into a far more palatable 245-minute single experience.
It's still an epic runtime, no question, but between the seamless cuts and the streamlined nature of the story, it really feels like the nigh-on definitive way to digest Peter Jackson's bloated vision.
The cringe-worthy love triangle involving Legolas (Orlando Bloom) is gone, as are the flabby Dol Goldur scenes, and Lee's version was also released online in full 1080p, unlike most other edits of the trilogy.
The Hobbit still doesn't hold a candle to Jackson's original trilogy, but Lee's momentous effort reworking the films into a more coherent whole is nothing short of editing magic.
