10 Best Movie Performances From Nameless Characters

7. Jennifer Lawrence As Mother – Mother!

The Good The Bad And The Ugly Clint Eastwood
Paramount Pictures

Not many will have a strong enough stomach to start this film let alone sit through the entirety of its two-hour runtime without squirming, but if you did, you were rewarded with a tremendous yet traumatising performance from Jennifer Lawrence that warranted critical acclaim.

The film in question, mother!, might just be one of the 21st century’s most distressing and downright disturbing. It’s a film that warrants watching rather than explaining, as its peculiar and puzzling premise is shrouded in ambiguities for its viewers to solve.

In typical Darren Aronofsky fashion, mother! doesn't pull any punches or shy away from profoundly upsetting imagery. This is very much Jennifer Lawrence’s film, and she all but knocks it out of the park.

Lawrence’s ‘Mother’ is trapped in a never-ending nightmare that only grows increasingly despicable as the movie progresses, leading to her becoming progressively more powerless as she succumbs to the carnage and chaos that surrounds her for the majority of the movie. Lawrence has been a tour de force within the industry for some time now despite only being 33 years of age, and it was inevitable she would bring her trademark A-game to the part. After all, she does have an Oscar.

Aronofsky has a proven track record of giving his actors the platform to shine, with notable names coming in the form of Mickey Rourke, Natalie Portman, and of course, most recently Brendan Fraser, so it’s no real surprise that he chose Jennifer Lawrence to join such illustrious company.
