10 Best Movie Robots
2. R2-D2 - Star Wars
There was always going to be one of the Star Wars robots on this list, right? BB-88 is great, but it’s clear that he’s built on the foundation of R2-D2’s legacy. While that didn’t stop T-1000 being the Terminator franchise’s representative, BB just doesn’t do enough to edge out R2-D2 for the top spot.
Meanwhile, C-3PO is just as iconic as R2, but the posh affectation and uptight attitude isn’t for everyone. For some, C-3PO is one of Star Wars’ most irritating characters, so had too much going against him. Finally, Rogue One’s K-2SO made a late surge, but it wasn’t enough when stacked against R2-D2’s robot legacy.
It’s not just a process of elimination which landed R2-D2 here though.
Yes, he lacks a personality, but many of the robot characters here are more like human characters who happen to be made of circuit boards. R2-D2 is the most roboty robot here, communicating solely through beeps and boops.
Despite that, he’s a memorable character even amongst Star Wars’ stacked cast, and has a much bigger impact on the plot than his severely limited dialogue would have you believe. R2-D2 manages to do a lot after being given very little.
