The Previous Film: Tron (1982)

One of the most stunning visual and auditory experiences of the 21st century - especially if you were lucky enough to see it on a giant IMAX screen - 2010's Tron: Legacy is a fine example of the movie-damaging potency of "style over substance".

Yes, it looks absolutely beautiful - the bright, neon-infused Grid should have won the film an Oscar nod all by itself - and Daft Punk's electric score feels like a character in its own right. But Legacy suffers big-time in the story department, and its flat, dry, humourless lead characters drag down what should have been a successful franchise-starter.

It's enjoyable in a turn-your-brain-off sort of way, and when the images are this pretty, it's so easy to just put Legacy on, kick back and spend an entertaining few hours immersing yourself in a flawlessly-realised world.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
