The Previous Film: Fantasia (1940)

A series of loosely-connected shorts rather than a fully-fledged feature-film, Disney's Fantasia 2000 is, like Tron Legacy, not for people who like their films to come with a complex plot or deep characters.

But in Fantasia 2000's case, this lack of substance was wholly intentional.

Often described as a "concert film", Fantasia 2000 brings together a series of brief skits that are animated to flow alongside the music - compositions from the likes of Beethoven and Stravinsky. Ever wanted to see a flamingo play with a yo-yo? You got it! How about a family of flying whales? You're in luck!

The abstract nature of Fantasia 2000 is its best feature, while also being its worst. The animation truly is a joy to behold, and it's surprisingly affecting at times - the story of a one-legged toy soldier pining for a toy ballerina is beautifully told - but each short is very one-dimensional, and on repeat viewings, they just aren't as entertaining as they are on that first watch.

So while it may not be a wholly satisfying cinematic experience, the expert craftsmanship on display here is enough to avoid dismissing Fantasia 2000 as a drawn-out DVD extra.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
