10 Best Movies About Unrealised Dreams
5. Titanic
Almost every main character in Titanic has a dream of some description, and almost all of them fail to live those dreams out. The destruction of the boat is the physical manifestation of its passengers' hopes, with thousands of people boarding the vessel in search a better tomorrow, and very few of them living to see it.
Rose lives a comfortable upper-class life, but all the pomp and circumstance - as well as her marriage to Cal, which is influenced by her mother and does not come from a place of love - makes her incredibly unhappy, to the point that she attempts suicide. She dreams of an escape, and when she meets Jack, she gets a taste of the freedom that a simpler life would grant her.
As for Jack, he's a penniless artist riding a wave of luck, hoping that the Titanic will lead him to a better life. With Rose, he finds things he's never experienced before - love, affection, family - and for him, those are more valuable than fine cigars, jewels, or any amount of riches a man could have. His idea of the American dream ends with happiness, not money.
But that dream is never achieved - at least not in the long-term. Jack dies of hypothermia in the freezing water, and rather than Titanic taking him to something better, it only led him to his death. Rose did go on to live a long, peaceful life, but the two never got the many years of happiness together that they hoped for.
