2. Only Lovers Left Alive

Sure to roll out in limited release later in the year, Jim Jarmusch's mental vampire film was not only one of the strongest productions screened at Cannes, but is also one of the best films of the whole year (so far). Adam (Tom Hiddleston) is an ennui-laden vampire who is fed up with trawling the vapid landscape of Detroit, and misses his vampire wife Eve (Tilda Swinton), who is settled in Tangier. The two meet up in Detroit, at which point Eve's younger sister (Mia Wasikowska) comes to visit, throwing their situation into completely disarray. This is as barmy as you would expect a vampire film from Jim Jarmusch to be; it is irreverently funny, superbly acted across the board, beautifully shot and wonderfully scored. The film is dripping with mood and atmosphere from first frame to last, such that most won't mind if its pacing is a little slow from time to time. On the whole, though, a superb indie that will doubtless become a cult hit.
