10 Best Music Sequences In The Shrek Films

9. Robin Hood - Oh, Merry Men!

In this memorable musical sequence, Robin Hood bursts onto the scene and swoops Princess Fiona away from Shrek and Donkey.

Whilst creepily trying to charm Princess Fiona into leaving Shrek and Donkey behind, Hood breaks into song to introduce himself and impress his newly found damsel in distress.

The lyrics in this song are hilarious and suggestive, especially the line:

"I like an honest fight and a saucy little maid. What he's basically saying is he likes to get... paid!"

This scene hilariously parodies romantic French stereotypes and also classic movies such as West Side Story and The Matrix. The best moment of the scene is when Friar Tuck, who is playing the accordion in time to Princess Fiona's beat down, tries to hold his instrument in front of his face for protection but is knocked out as she punches through it, putting an end to the musical number.

It's simultaneously a great parody of the played out damsel in distress narrative which most classic fairytales are guilty of pushing, and it is the revealing moment that Princess Fiona has more to her than originally meets the eye.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
