The easiest way to describe GERTY is to call him the anti-HAL. Moon stars (ha, moon-stars) Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell, a lone technician working a three-year shift on the natural satellite that orbits the earth. His only relief from solitude (especially when the comm station is on the fritz) is his intelligent computer GERTY, voiced eloquently by Kevin Spacey. Once again, here is an example of a robot (or technology-controlling computer) whose most important task is actually just companionship. Without giving too much away, Moons plot progresses in such a way that things keep getting worse and worse for Sam Bell. GERTY has been programmed to be friendly to Sam and keep him comfortable, but it is presumably more important to the company that created him that the station stays functional/profitable. Lucky for Sam, GERTY is loyal to him and really does everything in his power to help him with his ever-worsening situation(s), eventually even at the companys expense. Kevin Spacey often plays conniving and/or evil characters, but maybe thats just when hes stuck on earth- in space hes a total sweetheart.
