There definitely seems to be a trend of these robots (at least the ones that talk) being voiced by soft-spoken and acclaimed British actors, and Jarvis (voiced by Paul Bettany) is no exception. Robert Downey Jr.s Tony Stark/Iron Man persona is a playboy billionaire BAMF; basically hes Bruce Wayne without the chip-on-his-shoulder trauma and tragedy. Where Bruce has Alfred, Tony has Jarvis. Jarvis responds to Starks every whim and helps him build incredible devices with his one arm. He also can control any bit of technology his creator has engineered, right down to blowing up those expensive suits on command. The best part about Jarvis is that hes constantly available to Tony (in his ear when Tony is in the suit) and there is a good deal of sassy banter between the two. Much like Alfred, Jarvis often pokes fun at Tonys ostentatiousness (What was I thinking? Youre usually so discreet). He also has the decency to feign exhaustion when his power runs out (I think I need to sleep now). In essence, Jarvis is the perfect counterpoint to Tony and allows Robert Downey Jr. to continuously show off his wit and charm, which is a good part of the fun of the Iron Man franchise.
