10 Best Roger Deakins Movies

5. The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Deakins really didn't have any luck at the Oscars until recently. In 2007, he was nominated twice, for the The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and No Country For Old Men, but still lost out to There Will Be Blood.

And while the Paul Thomas Anderson drama is good, nothing in it can match up to the train robbery sequence in Andrew Dominik's Western epic.

It's a brilliantly tense and foreboding scene, despite being the lack of lighting. In fact, Deakins' limited use of lights, gives the setting a sense of realism, with the few clear shots we do get, being some of the most iconic of his career.

Even if you've never seen the film, you'll likely recognise the sight of the train coming to a halt and its steam engulfing a shadowy figure, while KKK members lurk in the woods.
