10 Best Roger Deakins Movies

4. Fargo

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Gramercy Pictures

Less is more in Deakins' best collaboration with the Coen Brothers, with simple shots and restrained camera movements capturing the isolated tone of Fargo.

Every wide, establishing shot of a lonely figure walking around the snowy landscapes, is a painting that belongs in an art gallery. But Fargo is high up on this list because of how Deakins' cinematography helps flesh-out the Coens' characters.

When Marge and Norm Gunderson (Frances McDormand and John Carroll Lynch) share the same scene, they are always framed together, establishing their strong relationship despite only sharing nine minutes of screen time. Conversely, partners in crime Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stomare), always appear separate from each other in almost every scene when sharing the same space, signifying their lack of unity.

It's little details like that, that make Fargo special, even though it lost the Oscar to The English Patient.
