10 Best Roger Deakins Movies

3. The Shawshank Redemption

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Columbia Pictures

Widely considered the greatest movie of all time, it's not surprising to learn that Mr Deakins was behind the camera.

Deakins purposely filmed very few establishing shots of Shawshank prison, adding to the claustrophobia felt by the inmates, which in turn amplified the impact of the wide scenic shots of the ocean toward the end.

There are too many iconic shots to name on this list, the most famous ones, the camera zooming out as the Warden (Bob Gunton) discovers Andy Dufresne's (Tim Robbins) escape tunnel as well as the shot of Dufresne standing free in the rain, will live on forever in cinematic history.

The latter shot, while powerful, was actually one of Deakins' least favorites, claiming that it was: "Over-lit" and lacked a close up of Robbins' face. Nevertheless, it is an image taht has gone on to symbolise the film and its core message: Get busy living, or get busy dying.
