10 Best Roger Deakins Movies

2. 1917

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Universal

If Deakins' doesn't win for this masterpiece of film-making at the upcoming Oscars, there truly is no justice in the world.

All made to look like one continuous shot, Sam Mendes' First World War epic, was immaculately filmed, with months of preparation and rehearsals. The result is two hours of cinematic spectacle, which has already won the Golden Globe for best drama film and could well be taking home the top prize at the Academy Awards as well.

The burning church scene was executed so well, thanks to a scale model of the town being constructed in advance, compete with mini LED flairs and a light bulb inside the church model, they were able to map out the entire sequence and work out where the best shots would be.

Much like Gravity and Dunkirk, 1917 continuously builds a sense of tension and dread, leaving audiences on the edge of their seat and it very nearly tops this list of Deakins' most beautiful movies.
