10 Best Scenes When Movie Characters Turned Evil
8. Gollum - The Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers
Gollum was always an evil character, and because he was once a different being named Sméagol, who fell to the One True Ring's temptation, he's had multiple transitional events in his elongated life. Claiming the Ring, and killing his friend over it was certainly a transition, but that was less about moving from good to evil, and more about the creation of the creature that would become Gollum.
Over the course of The Lord of the Rings films, Gollum was shown to have a bifurcated personality. One was essentially good and may have been a remnant of his original identity, while the other represented the cruelty and derangement caused by the Ring.
Gollum's transition from good to evil — well, his most important one anyway, came in The Lord of the Ring - The Two Towers, when he is wrestling with his devotion to his "Precious" against his loyalty to his master, Frodo.
In what can only be described as a brilliant scene, Gollum has a conversation with himself, as if he's one personality talking to another. On the one hand, he defends his master, while on the other, he defends his need to reclaim his Precious.
Ultimately, he casts the evil side out, claiming "Sméagol's free!" While this may seem like a transition from evil into good, it's the opposite, as it lays the foundation for his inner duality, which is fully devoted and utterly beholden to the One True Ring. In the end, he betrays Frodo, bites off his finger, and succumbs to his devotion.
