10 Best Scenes When Movie Characters Turned Evil

2. Jack Torrance - The Shining

Steven King's The Shining has been adapted several times over the years, and while Stanley Kubrick's film doesn't adhere to the book as much as King may have liked, it remains a fascinating film, which was expertly directed and brilliantly acted. Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Jack Torrance was particularly impressive, as it showed the slow descent into madness from beginning to end.

Jack starts the film as a loving father and husband, but the isolation of the Overlook Hotel begins to wear on him as time ticks on. He spent most of his time writing, with the goal of finishing his novel when his employment and time in the hotel came to an end, but that didn't happen.

What did happen was, the ghosts of the hotel began to pick at his sanity little by little until he snapped, turning against his wife and son. The transition occurred slowly and extended through the entire film, so there wasn't a single scene depicting his switch to evil, but one moment does stand out among the rest.

When he finally snaps, Jack grabs an axe, and chases his wife through the hotel to their room, where she barricades herself and her son in the bathroom. Jack maniacally breaks through the door to exclaim, "Here's Johnny" as his wife cringes in terror.
