10 Best Sci-Fi Comedy Movies You Need To Watch

7. Thor: Ragnorok

Galaxy Quest Sigourney Weaver
Marvel Studios

It really isn’t fair that someone as handsome and charming as Chris Hemsworth is also funny, but there we go. Thor: Ragnorok makes the smart move of placing Marvel’s goofiest character in the hands of director Taika Waititi, and the result is one of the most purely enjoyable films in the MCU collection.

The plot, as is often the case for the sillier Marvel movies, is but a trifling matter: Thor finds himself stranded on a faraway world where he is captured and forced to partake in gladiatorial combat for a baying crowd. Here he meets Hulk, in a similar pickle, and the two team up to make their escape.

The main conflict revolves around Cate Blanchett as Hela, but the best stuff revolves around the motley crew of weirdos on the planet Sakaar, including Jeff Goldblum as, essentially, Jeff Goldblum with a blue chin, and Waititi as a rock monster who gets most of the best lines.

There’s no overreliance on mythology here; you don’t need to have seen eight other Marvel films to get what’s going on. It’s just great, daft, flashy fun.
