10 Best Sci-Fi Comedy Movies You Need To Watch

5. Men In Black

Galaxy Quest Sigourney Weaver
Columbia Pictures

An early entry in Will Smith’s ascendency to Hollywood royalty, the Men In Black series, with the exception of 2019’s reboot, is dynamite family fun. The first remains the best from a comedic standpoint because it gets the most out of its stars’ odd couple dynamic, but the two sequels are perennially underrated winners.

The first film takes a simple premise and works it wonderfully. It’s a culture clash cop comedy, only with shape shifting aliens instead of run of the mill crooks. Smith is at his energetic best, and he’s well matched by Tommy Lee Jones, pound for pound the world’s grumpiest actor. The late Rip Torn has a fun supporting role as the head of the secretive agency - his unique charisma is deeply missed.

Really, though, the film hinges on the surprising chemistry of its leads. Smith brims with confidence, fully aware that he has the world at his feet; Jones brings genuine pathos to a part he could have played in his sleep. It’s a tightly plotted, warm, genuinely funny film the likes of which we see all too irregularly these days.
