10 Best Sci-Fi Films People Who Hate Sci-Fi Should Watch

1. Palm Springs

The Groundhog Day effect has appeared in dozens of shows and movies over the years. We generally find a character stuck in a loop by dream, simulation, or a curse, but the film Palm Springs offers a fresh take on the premise.

Not only is a scientific answer revealed - kind of - but we see a character make fair use of the time spent in the loop.

Andy Samberg's character Nyles is already stuck when the movie begins, reliving a day at a wedding of people he barely knows. Having lost track of time, he's accepted his circumstance. Then Sarah, played by Cristin Milioti, meets Nyles, who accidentally gets her stuck in the loop.

After an initial freak out, Sarah accepts her new reality and finds a friendship in Nyles. This moment is where the movie differs from other time loop narratives, in that Sarah spends infinity educating herself to find a way out of the time loop.

In most groundhog-style movies, the main character need only be kind to others, and their problem is solved. This film forces Sarah to stick to her motivations and see them through.
