10 Best Sci-Fi Movie Endings Of All Time
3. Children Of Men
Alfonso CuarĂ³n's haunting tale of a future world plagued by infertility is every bit as harrowing as it is beautiful, and that remains the case right up until its final moments.
Unlike most post-apocalyptic films that centre around humanity (or lack thereof) coping with a single event, Children of Men instead deals with a society continuing to live whilst knowing there is no future for their species.
There's no better presentation of how hope for our future can give us solace than in the final scenes between Theo (Clive Owen) and Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), as they drift across the foggy ocean looking for 'The Human Project', a research ship looking for a cure to infertility.
After being fatally wounded trying to protect Kee and her newborn baby, Theo is bleeding out in the tiny rowboat. As Theo is succumbing to his wounds, he gently instructs Kee how to burp her baby, an incredibly human moment between the pair. When Kee says she'll name the child Dylan after Theo's deceased son, he smiles and finally passes away. He now knows there is hope for humankind, and he knows he's done his part in securing it.
