2. The Mist
Frank Darabont was no stranger to adapting the works of Stephen King for the big screen when he took on The Mist, directing both The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile prior to it. Whilst the former is often remembered for its hopeful, happy ending, The Mist will be remembered for the exact opposite.
After succesfully escaping the furore of a religious mob, the five main characters drive as far as they can, spotting an staggeringly huge monster within the mist, before eventually running out of petrol. Realising the horrors that await them outside, and with no means of escape, the group decides to take their own lives.
Unfortunately for David (Thomas Jane), there's only four bullets left, and he takes the mantle of killing the other four survivors, including his eight-year old son. A heartbreaking moment by itself, it only becomes more so when David steps outside to surrender himself to the monsters, only for the mist to dissipate and reveal the army exterminating the remaining monsters.
After realising that the death of his friends and son were in vain, he screams in anguish, creating one of the most tragic endings in modern cinema.
