10 Best Sci-Fi Movies Of 2020
6. The Platform
This Spanish Sci-Fi thriller is a taut story that deals with fundamental issues of social science and thus has a lot to say about the nature of humanity. The simple premise is grounded by a feeling of accuracy within the title, as the truthful depiction of selfishness and survival of the fittest mentality is well handled and doesn't overdo it.
The film is set in a "Vertical Self-Management Centre" where it's residents are fed via a platform. There are thirty floors to this building, and the food is given to those at the higher level who receive it first. Every thirty days the residents' positions are switched, and the cycle begins a new.
It's a film utterly filled with conflict, as those atop the centre often overindulge and leave barely any scraps for those below them, which leads to a similar response when the tables are turned. This ends up carrying the narrative far further than you would expect and makes the film utterly engrossing throughout its runtime.
It easily deserves a place on this list for being a bleak, yet entertaining, outlook on the state of hierarchy and an utterly unique science fiction project.
