10 Best Sci-Fi Movies Of 2020
5. Love And Monsters
Love and Monsters began development in 2012 and wasn't brought into production until 2018 after Dylan O'Brien's signed as the lead and Michael Matthews jumped in the director's chair. Thankfully, it was utterly worth the wait, as this unique post-apocalyptic film carries all the right energy, and features a plethora of fun monsters - as could be expected with the title.
The film tells of a world that suffered a "Monsterpocalypse" after the creatures of Earth mutated and grew to abnormally large sizes and wiped out over 90% of the population. O'Brien's Joel acts as our protagonist, as he leaves the safety of his underground bunker to find his girlfriend from before the end of the world.
It has a similar energy to that of Zombieland, with the awkward lead, ravaged setting, perfect sense of comedy timing, and even a southern guiding hand in the form of Michael Rooker's Clyde Dutton. However, it utterly delivers on an original world which feels equal parts believable, yet fantastical.
In addition to the well-established setting, O'Brien's leading performance makes it easy to become engrossed in the adventure, and the introduction of the loveable dog Boy becomes a quick source of investment.
