The work of David Cronenberg has given us some of the most grotesque, but enthralling science-fiction movies of all time, and he can rest easy knowing that his legacy is secured. With such a strong shadow cast over him, it was integral for his son Brandon Cronenberg's first major release since 2012 to live up to expectations, and thankfully Possessor does just that.

The film is set in a world where a secret organisation employs assassins to infiltrate their targets' lives before taking them out. They do this by using science to possess the body of someone close to the subject, creating an elaborate narrative to make the murder believable, and then killing their host to get back to their original body.

Our protagonist is named Vos, and she is an expert in this trade, but is having trouble thanks to her desire to remain in a loving relationship with her husband and son. Thanks to this, she loses control over one of the subjects and ends up stuck in the conscious mind of a target she has possessed.

The film is utterly tense and full of fantastic visual imagery. It's also the goriest movie of the year as practical effects are used to make the violence utterly visceral, as expected with the Cronenbergs.
