While Avatar at its core is little more than space Pocahontas, the sheer scale of the work that went into the film is impressive enough alone to earn it a spot on the list.

The world of Pandora was so meticulously crafted and so beautifully executed, that Avatar is a genuine pleasure to watch, even if the plot was somewhat predictable.

Seeking the incredibly rare and aptly named "unobtanium", Jake Sully is put into his dead twin brother's 'Avatar', a genetically engineered body of one of the Na'vi, the proud indigenous species of Pandora.

Avatar brought a whole new audience into the world of Sci-Fi, and was a massive mainstream success with both audiences and critics. Its stunning 3-D visuals and special effects made the film an impressive spectacle that was deemed by many worthy of multiple cinema trips.

With sequels a long time in the works finally seeming to be going ahead, there will soon be even more Avatar to get excited about.
