10 Best Sci-Fi War Films

9. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Edge of Tomorrow Live Die Repeat
Lucasfilm

Just when we thought we knew what to expect from the Star Wars franchise, it threw us a curveball that shattered our expectations and showed us just how much happens behind the lightsaber duels and force choking.

The film opens with adorable little Jin Erso watching as the Empire murders her mother and forces her father into their service so that he can build the Death Star that we've all come to know.

The film explains away the small plot hole in A New Hope, showing us that the Death Star's weakness was actually placed there deliberately by Erso to give the rebels a chance to stop the Empire that murdered his wife.

Not only is Rogue One touching, but it's exciting, fast-paced and a whole lot grittier than we would have expected from a franchise under Disney's umbrella.

Rogue One absolutely nailed it, taking us deeper into the events that led up to A New Hope's beginning, and doing it so effortlessly and stylishly that it was hard to take your eyes from the screen.
