10 Best Sci-Fi War Films
4. Independence Day
Independence Day remains one of the most iconic Sci-Fi action films of all time, and it's not easy to find a fan of the genre that hasn't seen it.
Independence Day delivers on its title, and it shows the rest of the world exactly how ready the USA is to engage itself in a war that it has no idea how to win (as if Vietnam hadn't already taught us).
When aliens attack, an unlikely group of people come together to fight against them, in a high-stakes disaster movie of truly epic proportions.
For a time, it was the second-highest-grossing film of all time (behind Jurassic Park), and is still well-loved by fans the world over.
Independence Day also won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and given its 1996 release it really was something to behold. The large scale set pieces (blowing up the White House, anyone?) are a definite high point, and Will Smith's "Welcome to Erf" line has stuck with audiences for decades.
