10 Best Sci-Fi War Films

3. Starship Troopers

Edge of Tomorrow Live Die Repeat
TriStar Pictures

Starship Troopers was released in 1997, a satirical sci-fi war film based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name.

Critics were quick to dismiss it as an overindulgent gore-fest, but it has since become a cult classic, and its subtle satire has been given closer inspection.

Starship Troopers follows Johnny Rico and the Mobile Infantry as they fight a war against an insectoid species known as the Arachnids or "Bugs".

Starships Trooper's director, Paul Verhoeven, attempted to read the book in preparation for making the movie, but stopped after two chapters, dismissing it as "boring", "very right-wing" and "quite a bad book". Eventually, he simply asked the script writer to tell him the story.

This attitude shines through in the film, at once paying homage to the book upon which it was based and lampooning it, making for a completely unique experience.

Starship Troopers is a gem for fans of Sci-Fi, Action, or War films, and it thoroughly deserves its place on this list.
