4. Patrick Bateman - American Psycho

Before he was beating the mentally ill in the name of vigilante justice as the caped crusader, Batman or even before working in a metal factory with insomnia, Christian Bale's best-known role was probably that of Patrick Bateman, in American Psycho.

Based on the hugely popular 1991 novel of the same name, American Psycho was an intriguing and satirical look at the life of the yuppie. Christian Bale's deranged Patrick Bateman is scary, psychotic and actually pretty funny.

Struggling with his own urges and materialistic persona, Bateman is an irritating and superficial businessman by day and deranged lunatic by night, pretty much the combo that would serve Bale well when it came to playing Batman a few years later.

Featuring some of the most intensely graphic sex scenes and murder scenes in movie history, American Psycho still manages to conjure up some iconic scenes that match the tone and gore seen throughout, especially when Bateman dons a plastic, see-through raincoat and murders his co-worker with an axe to Huey Lewis and the News' "Hip to Be Square".

The film has since earned its place in history as a sardonic and satirical take on American capitalism, parodying the consumerism of the world back then and what it would predict in the future.

Bale's performance as Bateman is fantastic and worth a look for anyone interested in the actor's impressive filmography.
