4. Nightmare On Elm Street
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adgp0v_mfTk Number of films: 7, plus a reboot and a crossover If Chucky is witty and scary in equal measure, then Freddy Krueger is hilarious and downright terrifying. Most would even say nightmare-inducing, which is a pretty apt description for the knifed-glove and fedora-toting dream killer. Wes Craven's original horror masterpiece was a sensational box office hit and one of the biggest films of the slasher-dominated 80's. A line of sequels soon followed, with each being labelled anywhere between terrible and amazing, showing just how varied the films themselves really were. Each was undeniably an Elm Street slasher film, but each had a new concept to bring out and a new story to tell. Even Wes Craven's return to the series, New Nightmare, brought a starkly original new theme to the series, one which may not have been executed perfectly but was still interesting to behold. Unfortunately the franchise was one of many to suffer a pretty terrible overhaul by, you guessed it, Platinum Dunes. This remake was not even allowed to settle in mediocrity, being roasted alive (ironically) by critics and fans alike. Jackie Earle "Rorschach from Watchman" Haley throws in a decent performance, but nothing can really ever compare to the charisma and sinister charm of Robert Englund's vivid portrayal of the coolest psychopath ever.
