10 Best Slow-Burning Psychological Horror Movies

1. The Invitation

The Lodge
Drafthouse

Is The Invitation the best psychological horror movie of the past decade? Yes, yes it is.

While attending a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife and her new beloved, protagonist Will starts to suspect that there is something sinister afoot. As the night goes on, he is forced to question his own fleeting sanity.

With The Invitation, it's best if you know as little as possible when going in. To spoil yourself on its twists and turns would be to do a disservice to yourself. With a film as puzzling and enigmatic as this, the less you know the better.

You will feel as though you've been put right in the shoes of Will. His progressive slide into paranoia and panic becomes your progressive slide into paranoia and panic. This bond between viewer and character allows for the film to worm its way into your head and under your skin. So, even when all is revealed, that feeling of psychological violation, of nothing being as it seems, will remain.

The Invitation is a masterpiece, one that no matter how many times you watch it still hits just as hard as the first time around. Do not sleep on this one.
