10 Best Stephen King Movie Adaptations

1. The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption

Regarded by many as one of the best movies of all time, The Shawshank Redemption is a monumental collaboration of so many talented artists at the peak of their powers, namely writer-director Frank Darabont and a cast including Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton and Clancy Brown.

With a staggering seven Oscar nominations, this is easily the most-acclaimed King adaptation, and rightly so. A soulful yet emotionally shattering examination of friendship and the importance of hope, Shawshank balances its tone perfectly, and is about as sharp as sentimental, populist Hollywood cinema gets.

There has been a backlash of sorts in recent years, with a vocal camp calling the movie "overrated", but even if you don't think it's one of the best movies ever, it's still a deeply enriching, incredibly acted drama that only the most ardent cynics will freely dismiss. The ending could've been a little more restrained and ambiguous, but it's still a stone-cold masterpiece.
