10 Best Supernatural Horror Movies Of The Last Decade
5. The Cabin In The Woods
It's always intriguing when a horror film decides to break from its conventions and move across into a different subgenre. This comedy infused approach can be seen in the Evil Dead franchise, but no film has taken it further than the 2011 film The Cabin in The Woods.
This subversive flick centres around a group of students going to a cabin in a remote area, only to be met with killer zombies, ghouls, and all of the above. However, what makes The Cabin in The Woods so great is the way it weaves in horror tropes with its narrative.
It is revealed that all the horror the teens are subjected to is due to a secret organisation who need to please old gods. The way they do that is by manipulating the environment in order to give us the horror tropes we're so familiar with.
For example, the cult releases specific pheromones in order to get two teenagers to have sex before they die. This will please the old gods more than just a normal death.
Filled with great scares, excellent subversion and some terrific lead performances, Cabin in The Woods is an absolute gem.
