10 Best Supernatural Horror Movies Of The Last Decade
4. Hereditary
Ari Aster's feature length debut Hereditary is a triumph. A film that centres around loss, grief and sadness could become a bleak, depressing affair. While the film isn't shy when addressing these themes, it also has chilling, goosebump inducing scares.
The film is anchored by Toni Collette who plays a grieving mother dealing with an insufferable loss. From there we see how this starts to affect the family and we also see the lines begin to blur between mental illness and the supernatural. This is a difficult line to walk, but Aster manages to do it.
Toni Collette is Oscar worthy in this film. Her emotional range is second to none and the way she portrays Annie is heart-breaking. The supporting cast also manage to ground the film and add a very nice family dynamic to the piece, but it truly is Collette's performance that holds the film together.
A strong story, thoughtful themes and enough tension to keep you glued to the screen for the 127-minute runtime. Ari Aster showed audiences that he is one of brightest stars in Hollywood today.
