10 Best Supernatural Horror Movies Of The Last Decade
6. The Woman In Black
The Woman in Black had two impossible tasks: Surpass the iconic stage show and establish Daniel Radcliffe as a leading man outside of the Wizarding World. The Woman in Black manages to do both.
The atmosphere from the outset is eerie. Long shots of smoke and marshland manage to do justice to not only the stage play, but the novel on which it was based. When we finally reach Eel Marsh House, the rollercoaster of scares begins.
Gothic imagery lines every frame of the film and the masterful directing builds up the tension to a point where you can cut it with a knife. Instead of cutting said tension, though, director James Watkins smashes it with a sledgehammer. The Woman in Black features some of the most effective sound design and jump scares in horror cinema, a trait that can often be overlooked.
Radcliffe also manages to shine in the film, distancing himself well from Harry Potter, and establishes himself as a heartfelt, genuine dramatic actor. One of the most effective gothic horrors of the decade.
