Considering the sprawling monopoly that Netflix holds over the true crime genre, it's refreshing to see Hulu put forward one of 2023's more impressive offerings.

How I Caught My Killer is a nine-episode docuseries providing an innovative take on the genre. The series analyzes how the show's murder victims actually participated in the apprehension of their killer from beyond the grave.

Be it through the use of historic social media entries, snippets of writing that the deceased left behind or testimony from their friends and family, the documentary calls attention to the mind-blowing and exceedingly unlikely manner in which the guilty parties behind the victims' deaths were caught. Some of the case studies featured quite literally beggar belief, which makes for gripping viewing.

Hulu's documentary even manages to avoid falling into the trap typically posed by utilizing reenactments within the confines of a true crime narrative. These sequences can often appear cheesy - not to mention distasteful - but How I Caught My Killer sidesteps this potential pitfall, blending said sequences with carefully sourced interviews and footage in such a seamless manner that the finished product lands perfectly onscreen.

Featuring first-rate editing and pacing against the backdrop of compelling stories, How I Caught My Killer offers an exemplary true crime viewing experience.
